Winter Break Homework

We all know how busy the holidays get! But just in case I wanted to leave you some activities to complete (no need to turn in anything) over the holiday!

IREADY:

If you have access to computers I would suggest doing 2-3 reading and math activities a week on iready. You know that your child has passed the lesson successfully when it says "Congratulations!" They are very aware of this too.

Students will be taking their second diagnostic test when we return in January so it is important to stay on top of skills!

READING:

Read EVERY NIGHT! It is always important to read a good mix of fiction and non fiction books.

Fiction questions to ask after reading:
- Who are the characters? Who is the main character?
- Where is the setting? If the setting changes, explain why the setting changes?
-What happened in the beginning, middle, end?
-What problems occurred during the story?
-How were problems solved during the story?

Non Fiction questions to ask after reading:
-What is the main topic?
-What are some key details?
-How can you tell this is non fiction?

WRITING:
We will be having a writing celebration day upon our return and will on our narratives. Some possible narrative topics:
-winter adventure
-a trip to the park
-an ice skating day
-rainy day
-beach day
-a day when I was sick

Remember narratives/stories should have characters, a setting, beginning, middle, and end. have students watch for capital letters, finger spaces, punctuation and complete sentences (a character must do something)

MATH:
-counting to 100 by 1's and 10's
-measuring and weighing items then comparing
-sorting into groups
-writing numbers 1-20
-beginning addition and subtraction stories
-DOOR 24 (ipad APP same log in as IREADY)

Other ways to practice the sight words at home:

First Week of School

What a great first week of school we have had! I am sure your children have been telling you all about our days! Just in case they haven't here is some updates!

On Monday we really got to know each other and our classroom. This will continue throughout the year as we will continue to grow as a classroom community. We went over our expectations for most everything that we do here at school- such as classroom expectations, center expectations, hallway expectations, cafeteria expectations and of course playground expectations. We also introduced our positive reinforcement rainbows! You child has probably talked about rainbows and I will be more than happy to explain further at Open House on Thursday, September 3rd at 6pm.

Throughout the rest of the week we continued to learn new things about each other and our classroom. We jumped right into our NEW curriculum. It is based off NY Engage if you have an interest looking into the kinds of things that we will be learning this year and making yourself familiar with it. Duval County has made it their own by making SLIGHT changes.

It has been a long week, I am sure you have noticed when you get home your children are a little tired and a little hungry (I know I am!), so relax and have fun this weekend! Hoping that all of you can make Open House on Thursday, September 3rd at 6pm so we can show you all the fun things we have been doing so far! Enjoy your weekend! Go Jags!

On Monday- if your child comes with the Jag score written on paper in their BEE Folder, they will earn a free rainbow!
